Historical Background


                     As a geographical part of Thailand, Isan is the  land of plentiful arts and rich culture. The   historical and archeological evidences excavated at Ban Chiang, Udon Thani  Province have  brought Isan to the world attention of being an ancient And civilization land. As a cradle of world Civilization, Isan has accumulated beliefs, arts, traditions, and folk knowledge. The emergence of the Center of the Northeastern Art and Culture in 1970  was to shed light as well as reflect on the  Isan

                     Values, arts, and Culture .It all began in 1970 when a group of professors, students, and  culture surveys, taking pictures, interviewing people as well as collecting artifacts and fieldwork data for research reports, exhibitions  and  conservation  of  the Isan people’s ways of life and their culture. The State University Affairs grated the new name of the Center of  Northeastern Art and Culture as the Research Institute of Northeastern Art and Culture in 1986  the announce men t as such was appeared in the Government Gazette, special edition , volume 103 , section 198, pages 9-10, on November 12, 1986.

                     The Institute has a four storey building  displaying an applied Thai architectural design and was initially used as office, art exhibition areas, art and artifact collection, art seminars. With an affiliation to the Graduate School, the Institute was able to enroll its graduate students in Cultural Science (only an M.A. level )  in  2004 and Doctoral degree level in the following  year. The color chosen for gowns and the curriculum of Cultural Sconce is  silver gray.
